Big German Shepherd: Temperament, History & Origin  (with Pictures)

The German Shepherd, also known as the Alsatian in Britain, is a magnificent breed with a rich history and impressive capabilities.  Originating in Germany, these dogs have become renowned for their intelligence, unwavering loyalty, and unwavering work ethic.


Origin and History:

Developed in Germany in the late 1800s by Max von Stephanitz from herding dogs.

Originally bred to herd and protect sheep.

Temperament:

Intelligent, loyal, and trainable

Alert and protective

Can be stubborn or independent if not well-trained

Good with children when properly socialized

Physical Characteristics:

Medium to large-sized dog

Double coat, dense with a thick undercoat (regular brushing recommended)

Most common colors: black and tan, red and black, but also black, white, black and silver, or black and cream

Males: 24-26 inches tall at the shoulder, 75-95 pounds

Females: 22-24 inches tall at the shoulder, 50-90 pounds

Working Roles:

Police and military work

Search and rescue

Service dogs

Therapy dogs

Suitability as a Pet:

Can be excellent family companions with proper training and socialization

Require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation (training, games)

Not recommended for first-time dog owners due to their demanding needs
