What is a Beagle Dog?

The beagle dog breed, also known as the long-haired hound, has been around since the 1500s and is one of the most recognized dog breeds in America today. The term beagle was coined from the French word baygeul, which literally means little bell. This nickname came about because of their tendency to bark frequently and loudly, like a little bell chiming in the distance. They are part of the hound group, which means they are good at tracking down prey, making them great hunting dogs and family pets alike.

Physical characteristics

The average beagle dog weighs around 17-23 pounds and stands 14-16 inches high at the shoulder. The most common colors for a beagle are red, white, black and brown. They have two broad cheeks and have round chests with oval feet. Their eyes are typically dark brown or hazel but may be some other color as well such as blue or green. They have short legs with long back legs that give them their natural waddle gait.

 The history of beagles stems back to medieval England where they were used for hunting. Their excellent sense of smell, ability to follow scents and their loud baying made them perfect hunting companions. They are still used in various types of competitions today such as beagling, tracking and coursing. The AKC recognized them in 1885.

Tempérament

Beagles are good with people and other dogs. They can be a little too friendly and need training to know when it's okay to approach others. In the end, they are family dogs that love to please their owners.

 They may chase small animals, so they need to be well-trained and socialized. They are affectionate and playful with people of all ages, although they can be aggressive toward other dogs.

 They are good for families because they get along well with children and other pets. However, like all breeds, some dogs may be more or less amenable to training than others, so it's important to use positive reinforcement techniques when training a dog of any breed. Tempered early in life, they make excellent companions for children who can learn from them as well.

History

Originally bred for hunting small animals, beagles have since become more popular as family pets. These small dogs weigh anywhere from 15 to 20 pounds and are considered a good dog for apartment living because they don't require much space. Like other small hounds, they are happy outdoors as long as they have adequate shelter and have nice weather to enjoy. They can live in an average house and get by on short walks every day or two.

 Beagles have been around for a long time, and they’ve become quite popular. In fact, it’s estimated that more than two million beagles are living in American homes today. The breed originated in France before becoming popular among English royalty and spread from there. Today, some of America’s most prominent presidents have had beagles as pets – including JFK and Abraham Lincoln.

Training, Health, Care

A beagle is an intelligent, bold, and active breed of dog. They make great family pets because they are gentle and kind to children. The average lifespan for a beagle ranges from 10-13 years, but some live up to 16 or 17 years old. Their coat usually has one color but can have spots on their face and body as well. You can train them to do tricks if you want, but they're mostly just good at chasing rabbits!

 The beagle needs very little grooming. They should have regular brushing to prevent mats and tangles. Brushing will also get rid of loose hairs, which can be removed by plucking with your fingers or tweezers. Beagles only need baths when they are visibly dirty and must be dried thoroughly after every bath because it's easy for them to catch colds.
