The 5 Small Dog Breeds That Don't Need Grooming

Many small dog breeds have short coats that don't require much more than an occasional brushing to look beautiful. If you are looking for a small breed to add to your family, here are five that do not need grooming.

All Dogs Require Regular Grooming

No matter the size of your dog, they will need regular grooming. All dogs will shed hair, but some breeds shed more than others. Check out our blog post on how to brush a dog with shedding problems to help decrease the shedding by as much as 50%. Of course, brushing a dog is just one part of your daily grooming routine. It's recommended that you brush your dog before and after they go for a walk and once or twice per day when the weather isn't nice.

While all dogs require regular grooming, you can save yourself time and trouble by investing in a smaller dog that doesn't need as much maintenance. All small dog breeds need to be brushed on a regular basis and will still shed even if they don't require professional grooming or frequent brushing. But there are certain small dog breeds that are ideal for people who work long hours and find themselves short on time.

#1 – Havanese

Havanese have a beautiful, silky coat that should be brushed or combed with a fine-toothed brush one to two times per week. When bathing is needed, use warm water and a mild soap designed for puppies. Avoid bathing them more than once per month as over-bathing may dry out their skin and make it too sensitive. If they do need more frequent baths, they should be given no more than two at any given time, spaced out with three days between them.

A good, dog-specific shampoo will also work for them. Just avoid using any human products with sulfates, which can dry out their sensitive skin. Your vet or groomer should be able to give you advice on what type of shampoo is best for your Havanese and how often you should bathe them. When brushing your Havanese’s coat, do not go over the same spot too much as it may cause matting to form.

#2 – Affenpinscher

The Affenpinscher is a small dog breed that does not need grooming due to their short, smooth coat. This dog breed was created from European Terriers and other breeds of Spitz-type dogs bred in Germany in the 1700s. In 1931, the American Kennel Club recognized the Affenpinscher. This smart and hardworking dog will make an excellent companion for anyone who likes to keep things tidy.

 #3 – Brussels Griffon

The Brussels Griffon is a small dog breed that does not need grooming due to their short, smooth coat. This affectionate dog originated in Belgium where it was used as a ratter on farms, going after rats and mice. Today, they make wonderful family pets who adore kids and enjoy lots of attention from their owners. They are known for having lots of character in spite of their small size.

#4 – Pug

Pugs don't require a lot of upkeep, which makes them one of the easier breeds to care for. However, you should still take your pug for a walk every day and keep his nails trimmed to avoid overgrowth. Be sure that your pug also has food high in fat and protein because these will be more appealing to him than vegetables or fruits.

What is a pug's personality like? Pugs are known for their sweet personalities. They make excellent watchdogs due to their protective nature and loyalty to owners.

#5 – Maltese

Maltese are low-shedding and easy to groom. They only need a brush or comb through their long, silky hair once a week. As with all breeds, it's important to remove any mats or tangles that can form in the fur as these can lead to skin irritation.

It's also important to check your Maltese’s paws daily for any cuts or abrasions that could lead to infection. It's a good idea to examine their ears weekly as well since cleaning them at home can prevent ear infections later on. Finally, always be sure your Maltese has plenty of water so they can stay hydrated and healthy.

One reason we love small dog breeds is that they don't need to be groomed often. This makes life with a little pup easier, because you have less to worry about. Here are five small dog breeds that don't need grooming
